Rotor and Rotor Deconstruction
Rotor and Rotor Deconstruction (RotorDC) are two closely connected but legally distinct Brussels-based organisations working to advance the circular economy in architecture and construction.
Rotor is a nonprofit research and design organisation specialising in material reuse, resource flows, architectural transformation and circular construction strategies.
Rotor Deconstruction (RotorDC) is a worker-owned cooperative that puts these principles into practice through the recovery, refurbishment and commercial resale of building materials.
Together, they connect architectural research and design with the practical infrastructure needed to make construction-material reuse economically and technically viable.
Rotor Brussels
Rotor investigates the material environment, particularly the relationship between construction, resource consumption, waste and the continued use of existing buildings and components.
Its central ambition is to change how architecture and construction value, manage and reuse existing material resources.
Its work is organised around several interrelated objectives:
- Material circularity
Promoting direct reuse of building components instead of disposal or energy-intensive recycling. - Adaptive reuse
Exploring how existing buildings and interiors can be retained, transformed and adapted. - Material-flow research
Understanding how building products circulate through the economy, including economic and logistical barriers to reuse. - Policy and systemic change
Developing recommendations, tools and alternative economic models for resource-efficient construction. - Architectural culture
Challenging established assumptions about newness, demolition, value and material aesthetics.
Rotor Deconstruction (RotorDC)
RotorDC aims to make the reuse of construction materials practical, scalable and commercially accessible.
Where Rotor investigates material reuse through design and research, RotorDC operates the physical and logistical infrastructure that enables reusable components to remain in circulation.
Its business model connects buildings undergoing refurbishment or demolition with buyers seeking reclaimed building components.
BO–RD reuse hub
One of RotorDC’s most significant current initiatives is the development of BO–RD, a circular-economy production and reuse hub at its Evere premises, officially launched on 26 September 2026 (https://rotordc.com/a-place-for-reuse-and-crafts).
The site is being transformed into a mixed ecosystem of material recovery, repair, fabrication, workshops, businesses and cultural activities.
